The Midwives Service Scheme is an MDG backed project that seeks to mobilize midwives, including those newly qualified from Nigerian Schools of Midwifery; unemployed midwives and retired but able midwives for deployment to health facilities in rural communities to undertake one year community service.
The one year service would be mandatory for the newly graduated basic midwives, preparatory to being fully licensed to practice midwifery in Nigeria. The purpose of the project is to increase skilled attendance at birth so as to facilitate reduction in maternal, newborn and child mortality and morbidity.
